Winter Time | Зимовий час

I never liked switching back from daylight saving time. As sweet as it was, the prospect of getting an extra hour of sleep was invariably marred by the prospect of not seeing any sunshine after 5 pm. The only desire that the endless evenings evoked in me was to succumb to winter hibernation or, at least, melancholy. It wasn't until this fall that I started appreciating the long hours of darkness.

This year I wait for the evening with some tremulous excitement. As the deep purple shades are taking over the sky after the sunset, an anticipation of something unusual is crawling into my chest. It seems that some magical fairy is about to flutter out from a nearby nook, or a gray-bearded wizard is to appear any moment, his cloak embroidered with silver stars. If they do, they will hardly catch me by surprise.

Chasing the fading sky on my way home from work, I rediscover how much I adore being on the road at night. When the silhouettes of the world dissolve in the darkness, it becomes so surprisingly easy to be here, be now. So easy to trust the road and to believe that it will take you exactly where you need to go.

Also at night, lit with street and window lights, cities acquire that irresistible holiday charm that takes over the world around Christmas and New Year.

There's life hiding behind every twinkle.
There's a story waiting behind every window.
Every corner might prove to be a hideaway of a gnome.
Every door can turn out to be a gate to a different world.

These days I try anything to linger in the city as long as possible. There is so much pleasure in walking the evening streets, watching them come alive with string lights and shop window decorations, and sensing the hints of the approaching holidays in the air. This atmosphere does not yet carry the hype that usually emerges shortly before major festivities. Nevertheless, there is some undeniable cheerful secrecy floating through it, and the very awareness of my implication in it wakes up certain mischief in me.

I wrap up this mischief in crispy colorful paper and carry it home. There I unfold the package with a sly smile on my face, then light a cedar and balsam candle, put on some jazz, make myself a cup of melissa tea and retrieve a carefully hidden piece of chocolate from my secret sweets box. And at this point, all household chores turn into little witchcraft rituals, and the approach of a miracle becomes something certain and undeniable, something that will definitely come true as long as I wait for it long enough.

So I wait. I wrap myself in thick knitted cardigans, turn up the voice of Ella Fitzgerald and pour more spices into my tea. Occasionally, I step outside to look into the deep sky, which, just like the cloaks of all respectable wizards, is embroidered with silver stars.

And there, under the gaze of the night sky, I start feeling gratitude towards the darkness.

For all the secrets and possibilities it hides in itself.
For all the time it gives for thinking.
For all the space it leaves for magic.
For all the freedom it promises.

After all, darkness comes into our lives, so that we have something to pour our light into.
